The Hope Full
I promise to unite India and Pakistan with the power of Love and Peace and strengthen the bond between various religions by the force of Advaita. I will persuade China to give up its claim on Tibet and place the peace-loving Dalai Lama in the seat of her power. I will send bouquets to the military leaders of Myanmar and pray to them to voluntarily make Aung San Suu Kyi their leader and reinstate Human Rights. I will abolish AIDS from this world and suck all the harmful bacteria, protozoans, fungi and viruses from the earth and stick it into the moon along with NASA's probe. I will send diplomatic peace missions across the universe and ensure that the Star Wars remain a silver screen phenomenon. Phew, that was tiring. I will now collect my Nobel Peace Price. Thank you.

If promises are all that are needed to win a Nobel, our Indian Politicians should have got it long ago. It cannot be because Obama is black. our politicians are blacker (in which ever sense you perceive first). Well then let us see what all the reasons could be,
a) Nobel committee's unique way of giving an Ignoble award of war to George.W.Bush. After all Obama defeated Bush's party. Despite Lord Rama's many sterling accomplishments as a king, is he not remembered most for vanquishing Ravana before taking up the throne.
b) An obligation to perform. By giving him the Nobel Prize in Advance, the committee has obligated Obama to deliver on his promises. "May the Norwegian Force be with you." is their blessing. As Bachi Karkaria quips in her column in the Times of India, Obama has been given an anticipatory hail.
c) The anti-posthumous policy: This the controversial reason. (Gentlemen of the US Secret Service, please bear with me on this one. Just a reasoning not a provocation). The Nobel prize is not conferred on anyone posthumously. Before 1974, a person may still receive it, if he/she was alive when they were nominated. But since then, the person has to be alive on the date of announcement. Since there is always the fear of assassination of any dynamic agent of change, the committee probably just wants to make sure they don't do the same mistake as they did for Mahatma Gandhi.
What is more significant than the award itself were the results of the various polls conducted by news sites asking if Obama deserved the peace prize and on most sites around 40% said that he did. Just goes on to prove that the dispenser of hope is as always indispensable.
Before I sign off, let me join hands with the Peace Noble Laurate to wish a Happy Deepawali to all of you. Unless of course, you are a Narakasura worshiper. In which case, My heartfelt condolences.[;)]

"And then there are the men and women around the world who have been jailed and beaten in the pursuit of justice; those who toil in humanitarian organizations to relieve suffering; the unrecognized millions whose quiet acts of courage and compassion inspire even the most hardened of cynics. I cannot argue with those who find these men and women - some known, some obscure to all but those they help - to be far more deserving of this honor than I."
